However, the success of these missions depends on technical readiness, operational safety, specialized training, and international cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>Europe is currently experiencing a dangerous wave of wildfires during the summer season, driven by rising temperatures, dry vegetation, and strong winds that allow flames to spread rapidly toward cities, villages, and tourist areas.<\/p>\n<p>In recent days, several regions in France and Spain have witnessed extensive wildfires that forced tens of thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate threatened areas. Firefighting and emergency teams have faced significant pressure due to the large number of fire outbreaks and the difficulty of bringing them under control. They can quickly reach mountainous areas, dense forests, and difficult terrain that ground-based firefighting teams may struggle to access.<\/p>\n<p>Firefighting aircraft release large quantities of water or fire-retardant substances over the fire lines to slow the spread of the flames, reduce their intensity, and provide ground crews with additional time to establish firebreaks and protect residential areas and critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Helicopters are also used to carry out precise operations near difficult terrain, transport firefighters and equipment, monitor the movement of the flames, and identify hotspots that may reignite.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, aircraft do not operate independently from other emergency response teams, and they cannot bring major wildfires under control on their own. Effective wildfire response depends on the integration of aircrews, ground firefighting teams, command and control centers, meteorological services, and satellite-based monitoring systems.<\/p>\n<h4>Europe\u2019s Largest Wildfire Preparedness Operation<\/h4>\n<p>In preparation for the 2026 wildfire season, the European Union announced the implementation of its largest wildfire preparedness operation since the launch of its pre-positioning program in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The plan included the deployment of 777 firefighters from 14 European countries to high-risk areas, in addition to placing 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters on standby to support countries facing emergencies that exceed their national response capacities.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of July, European firefighting aircraft and helicopters were already deployed to support France. Pilots are required to fly at low altitudes near mountains, trees, and power lines, while operating in environments filled with smoke, ash, limited visibility, and severe air turbulence caused by intense heat.<\/p>\n<p>Several aircraft and helicopters may operate within a limited area at the same time. This makes airspace management and coordination between aircrews and command centers critically important.<\/p>\n<p>Guidance from the International Civil Aviation Organization indicates that aerial firefighting operations may require the establishment of restricted airspace to prevent conflicts between civilian aircraft and firefighting operations and to ensure the safety of all aircraft involved.<\/p>\n<p>The success of these aerial missions therefore depends on more than simply having firefighting aircraft available. It also requires:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continuous training for pilots and technical crews on complex wildfire scenarios.<\/li>\n<li>Comprehensive inspection and maintenance programs before and after every mission.<\/li>\n<li>Verification of the condition of engines, navigation systems, communication equipment, and water tanks.<\/li>\n<li>Advance planning of flight routes, water collection points, and drop zones.<\/li>\n<li>The presence of an aerial coordinator responsible for managing aircraft movements over the fire area.<\/li>\n<li>Direct coordination with ground firefighting teams and emergency services.<\/li>\n<li>Careful monitoring of physical and psychological fatigue among crews during long and repeated operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Technology Monitors Wildfires from Space<\/h4>\n<p>Satellites and digital monitoring systems have become essential components of wildfire management.<\/p>\n<p>The European Forest Fire Information System, known as EFFIS, provides updated information about wildfire locations, risk levels, and affected areas.
